History of Vojkovice village [ History ]

The village originated round 1500. In 1520 the village already stood, even though it is first mentioned at early 70s of the 16th century. Originally it belonged to the Tluks of Tošanovice and in the above-mentioned year it was already named as a part of the Frýdek Estate. The name of Vojkovice probably comes from Vojtěch, a man not known by us who probably founded the village.

Vojkovice - like all the villages in its vicinity - was a village of weavers. But here besides agriculture and weaving they earn a little extra by pushing for a considerable payment the shopkeepers' horse-drawn vehicles on the road to Těšín or to Frýdek up the both slopes the road ran through because Vojkovice lies in a valley on the confluence of three small rivers - Lučina, Holčina and Račok.

At Vojkovice they taught children since 1846, up to the time the children used to visit the school at Dobrá. The village had its own school building in 1877. Also in 1877 the chapel of the Holy Virgin was consecrated there. Vojkovice became famous by the local herbal liqueur so called " Vojkovice bitters " that was distilled from the Beskydy medical herbs at the Glesinger's and since 1926 at the Jokl's distillery. The liqueur was distilled here by 1952.
